Most copy paper makers do not indicate which trees are used to make their products. For the most part, you do not need to base your office’s purchase decisions on this factor. A more crucial issue is what the paper is intended for and how meticulously it was treated for that purpose.

The vast majority of workplace printers print using laser or inkjet technology. This makes it possible to categorise paper based on its intended use:

UNSUPPORTED:  unsupported element.

• The paper used in laser printers is stiff and smooth. It is built to withstand the high temperatures required to bind toner to paper.

• Inkjet printer paper is more absorbent and softer than laser printer paper. Many paper mills treat inkjet printer paper with ingredients that improve ink absorption and image clarity.

UNSUPPORTED: An unsupported element.

If you use inkjet printer paper in a laser printer, you will most likely get smeared, hazy images that fall far short of your quality standards. Furthermore, the absorptive compounds that cover the inkjet paper might form a residue that shortens the printer’s life or ruins it completely.
